Artifact: ELL Field Experience
Reflection:
This artifact is the ELL field experience, which I completed for ITEC 7430. For this experience, I worked with two English Language learners with instructional technology. Based on their areas for improvement and personal goals, I selected digital tools that would help them strengthen their English. I used podcasts, videos, and interactive online games and quizzes. The students learned about English idioms and expressions, conversational conventions, and cultural differences. I designed each lesson based on the goals set by the students and my observations of them in class. After working together for some time, the students showed significant improvement in their areas of growth. Overall, it was a very positive experience.
This assignment was very beneficial because I learned a lot about how educators can use instructional technology to assist the ELL students. In preparation for this experience, I completed the IRIS module on ELL students by Vanderbilt University. From this module, I gained a deeper understanding of how to teach my ELL students more effectively through gestures, bilingual notes, objects, and comprehensible input. When completing the field experience, I was able to apply what I learned. It was very rewarding to work with the students one-on-one to help them improve. I was glad that they were able to help establish their learning goals. They were very proud of themselves at the conclusion of the experience, and I was as well. If I were to complete this assignment again, I would have shared the information that I learned from the IRIS module and field experience for my PLC. I would have designated one of our meetings to address how each of us supports ELL students in the classroom. After a group discussion, I would have shared the resources that I compiled while completing this field experience so that all students could benefit.
The effects of this field experience can be assessed through observations, surveys, and assessments. There has been an observable change in my teaching style. In order to support my ELL students, I have applied to my lessons many of the techniques that I learned from the field experience and IRIS module. These strategies have led to increased performance of my ELL students. I am very proud of their higher achievement. Due to this field experience, I am a better educator. I have tools and tricks to help meet the various needs of my students.
