Candidates model and facilitate the safe, healthy, legal, and ethical uses of digital information and technologies. (PSC 4.2/ISTE 5b)
Artifact: Internet Safety Blog Post
Artifact: Copyright Presentation
Reflection:
Through the creation of the Internet Safety portfolio blog posting, which I created for ITEC 7430, and the copyright presentation, which I created for ITEC 7445, I was able to demonstrate my ability to "model and facilitate the safe, healthy, legal, and ethical uses of digital information and technologies." During my research for these artifacts, I gained knowledge and skills that will help me practice ethical usage and will help me guide my students and colleagues as well. I learned that only by modeling and addressing proper safe Internet behaviors and procedures with students will they learn how to protect themselves. As educators, we must open a dialogue with students about the safe and correct way to behave online, for example, by limiting the release of personal information and by providing proper citations. If we extend this conversation to the parents, then we will be more successful since the parents can reinforce the message with their children at home.
The creation of these assignments was extremely beneficial for me. I gained knowledge, skills, and the disposition necessary to keep my students safe when using technology. I learned about fair use and copyright laws, which I addressed in the copyright presentation to help our faculty and staff model proper behavior for the students. My presentation provides an overview of fair use and copyright laws but delves deeper into the ethical uses of video clips. At the end of the presentation, I provided three scenarios and asked my colleagues whether or not these scenarios violated fair usage and copyright laws. Their answers led to an engaging discussion on the ethical usage of video clips in the classroom. I shared my newly gained knowledge of how to use Creative Commons to find materials, like images, videos, and music, for my lesson without violating copyright laws. If I could recreate these artifacts, I would have the students create videos about healthy, legal, and ethical use of technology for the student body to view during homeroom. In these videos, the students would survey their peers at lunch about what they think it means to use the Internet in a healthy, legal, and ethical manner. Then my students can expand upon or correct their peers’ statements. I think information transmitted from student to student can be more powerful than when it is relayed from adult to student.
The effects of these artifacts can be assessed in my classroom through observation. The knowledge that I gained has changed my classroom procedures. I now share Internet safety information with parents and students at the beginning of each semester. I also make sure to follow proper copyright procedures when using media in my lessons in order to model appropriate behavior for my students. We as educators must hold ourselves to the same high standards to which we hold our students. We must both teach about and practice ethical and safe usage of the web. Since I shared my knowledge in a presentation to the faculty, the effects of these artifacts can also be observed throughout the school. I taught my colleagues to how facilitate healthy, legal, and ethical usage of the Internet in their classrooms. The effects can be assessed further via student and staff surveys.
