3.2 Managing Digital Tools and Resources
Candidates effectively manage digital tools and resources within the context of student learning experiences. (PSC 3.2/ISTE 3b)
Artifact: Internet Lesson Plan
Reflection:
For the Internet Lesson plan, which I created for ITEC 7430, I used a variety of digital tools, illustrating my ability to manage technology within the context of student learning. The ISTE student and teacher standards guided me in the creation of this lesson. I selected digital tools that encouraged and facilitated research, collaboration, assessment, communication, creation, critical thinking, evaluation, and reflection. I also used digital tools that would address the varying needs of each of my students. For example, I used Google Drive and online graphic organizers to help my lower achieving students organize their information and develop their final products.
Not only did I use these tools in the creation and execution of the lesson, but the students used the tools throughout their participation in the lesson and their creation of the final product. In the ISTE lesson plan, the students created a wiki to share their research with a broad audience. Throughout the project, students were provided with choices. I guided them with suggestions, lists, and links, but the students were able to decide which tool was best for their task. In order to help students use some of the digital tools, I created screencast tutorials to help them to use the tool effectively.
The creation and implementation of this lesson has been very beneficial for me. I discovered the multitude of free online resources that I can use to enhance my lessons and increase student engagement. By incorporating these tools and resources into my lessons, I gained important troubleshooting skills. I also discovered how to use each tool in a variety of ways throughout the lesson. Google Drive, for example, was used in each lesson to foster collaboration and communication. Within Google Drive, Google Docs was used by the students and me to create and share documents. Google Forms was used to gain feedback and encourage student reflection. These tools are encouraging critical thinking and creativity in my students as well as in myself. Overall, these experiences have given me the skills and knowledge to combine my curriculum standards with technology standards effectively. If I were to redesign this lesson, I would have used Diigo to share my resources with students. This social bookmarking tool would help the students share their research with their partners and myself. Also the annotation feature would help my students organize their sources.
The effects of this lesson can be assessed through classroom observations and assessments. The students were highly motivated by this student-center, technology-infused lesson; therefore, they were extremely engaged. The students were constructing their own understanding. This type of learning led to a deeper understanding of the material, which resulted in higher achievement on summative assessments. The data from tests reflected the increase in engagement. Additionally, this increased could be assessed through observing the students working diligently and staying engaged in the lesson.
